The project comprised of the design finalisation and construction of new high-level crossings at the Roper and Wilton Rivers, associated road works, realignment works, and upgrades to low spots.
The site of the works was located in East Arnhem Land, approximate 185 km from the Stuart Highway, south east of Katherine.

The works involved the construction of two high level bridges across the Roper and Wilton rivers as well as the construction of some combined 7.5 km of dual lane highway. The works were constructed in a highly sensitive ecological and indigenous heritage environment. The completion of the bridges significantly reduces the average annual duration of road closures to Ngukurr from 180 days down to 12 days leading to significant improvements for services provisions in the area.

The works were delivered under a Managing Contract agreement with the Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Logistic. Sixty-nine (69) Northern Territory businesses participated in the delivery of the works and four (4) of these identified as aboriginal owned companies.

Seventy-nine (79) individual aboriginal workers participated on site at various stages of the project with an average of fifteen (15) being on site on a daily basis resulting in an aboriginal participation rate of 12%.

The project delivered a total of 2139 hours of formal job skill training to 92 students for a range of different skills such as traffic controller, HR license, roller and watercart and General Industry Induction Training. The project team received a letter of recognition from the Minister of Indigenous Affairs, for the achievements in relation to the training delivery.

Sitzler constructed, managed and maintained an 85-person construction camp including a central kitchen and mess facility recreation rooms, outdoor recreation area, central power generation plant, water filtration system and waste water treatment plant for the duration of the project. The management of the camp also required “mothballing” the camp throughout the Wet Season shutdown periods.
